The Pottery Process All Northwinds Pottery is hand thrown on the wheel. Once it has dried to the leather-hard stage, the base is trimmed, handles are added, and any decorative flourishes are carved, stamped, or attached. Each piece is fired twice in an electric kiln. During the first firing, each pot is fired to 1940 F for approximately 14 hours, in order to prepare the piece for the glazing process. Glazes are applied using a variety of different methods such as dipping, brushing, pouring, spraying, and stamping. All Northwinds Pottery glazes are lead-free and food-safe. In the glaze firing, pots are fired to 2190 F for approximately 12 hours, resulting in the beautiful pots on display in the showroom!
